Removing Water Damage Smells From Your Home After Repairs

Water damage is difficult to undo, but it can be done. When you have a water damage restoration crew come in and make the repairs for you, you know that the job has been done right and any smells that remain in the home aren't caused by more damage hidden behind the walls. Here, you'll find a few tips that can help you remove the odors that remain even after the repairs have been made.

Circulate the Air

The fastest way to clear the odors is to circulate the air in the space. Do this by opening two windows or doors and putting a fan in each. One fan should be pulling fresh air in from outside, and the other fan should be pushing the stale air out of the house.

Turn on all of the ceiling fans throughout your home. The more you can get the air moving, the faster you'll be able to get the odors out.

Crushed Lava Rock

Crushed lava rock is known to absorb odors and lock them up inside the pores. Pick up a bag of crushed charcoal and a few pairs of women's knee-high panty hose. Put a couple handfuls of the crushed lava rock inside the panty hose and tie the top of it closed. These can be hung around the house or stashed in places that can't be seen easily and will work to absorb the odors in the home.

Change the Furnace Filter

Sometimes, if you haven't changed the furnace filter since the water damage was repaired, it could be the cause of the remaining odors. When the damage was present, the furnace was pulling the air from inside your home through the filter, so now, the smells are stuck in the filter. Try changing the filter and installing one with a scent packet to help make things smell a little better until  you can eliminate the smell for good.

Heat it Up

Get a space heater or two and heat up the space. Dry heat will help to beat the smells by removing any moisture that remains in the air. If you don't have a space heater, you can lease a heater from your local home improvement store. Run it several hours each day until you no longer smell the odors.

Talk with the water damage restoration crew that did the work if you continue to have problems with the smells in your home. They will be able to provide you with further assistance in eliminating that smell for good.
