These questions are to be asked during the knowledge testing section of a test by a board of Instructors. The questions are designed to test a student’s knowledge on what they’re learning while at the same time demonstrating the fact that as a Villari’s student they have a unique identity in the field of martial arts. Learning techniques is only one facet of the arts.
Q: Where were the Shaolin martial arts developed and when?
A: Hunan province of China appx. 495 AD
Q: What does the word Shaolin translate to in English?
A: Little forest or young forest
Q: What does the word Kempo translate to?
A: Way of the fist.
Q: The name of the Shaolin monk credited with formalizing Shaolin?
A: Boddharama.
Q: How many numbered combinations are there and why?
A: 108, usually attributed to the Hall of Wooden Dummies in the temple, of which there were 108.
Q: What do the words Kung Fu mean?
A: Supreme effort.
Q: Name 2 animals NOT part of the main five animals.
A: Monkey, eagle, bear, praying mantis, etc.
Q: At what degree is someone considered a Master Instructor?
A: 5th Dan, Godan.
Q: How did the original belt ranking system originate?
A: The white belt turned colors from a progression of sweat stains, grime, grass stains, and dirt until t became a brown to black color. It was considered a sign of seniority to have such a belt so they were not washed.
Q: Where and when was the first Villari school opened?
A: Waltham, MA 1968.
Q: How many ways of fighting are there and what are they?
A: Four: hitting, kicking, felling, grappling.
Q: What is the school motto?
A: It is bad to fight with one another, but worse to fight and lose.
Q: At what rank may a student wear a black uniform?
A: Purple belt, Huchikyu
Q: At what rank may someone wear a red uniform?
A: 4th Dan, Renshi or Yondan
Q: Who may wear yellow or gold on uniform?
A: Grandmaster, Hanchi
Q: At what rank shall someone wear a mixed black & white uniform?
A: Chief Instructor of a school or 2nd Dan, Nidan.
Q: What are the school colors?
A: Gold, black, red.
